Communication Failures
Communication failures. They are everywhere.
And are often more subtle than we realize—even in everyday situations.
Recently, I was traveling and stopped by a nearby restaurant in hopes of getting a coffee. I walked in and asked the host, "Good morning! Can I order a coffee to-go?" I was very much looking forward to ordering a hot latte with oat milk to accompany me on my chilly September morning walk. The host returned with a large black drip coffee instead. I looked at him and looked at the coffee that I did not order. I was confused and, to be honest, frustrated, but it hit me—I had never clearly communicated what I actually wanted. I expected the host to know that I was simply asking if it was possible to order a to-go drink, but I wasn’t specific about exactly what drink I wanted.
This small moment was a powerful reminder that communication is everyone's responsibility. We must be intentional with our words—clear, concise, and making sure the loop is closed to avoid misunderstandings. It’s not just about speaking; it’s about ensuring that the message is understood exactly as intended.
Whether it’s a coffee order or a critical conversation, being clear about your expectations can save time, prevent frustration, and lead to better outcomes.
How do you ensure clarity in your communication, especially in fast-paced or high-pressure situations?
